New Performance Turku Biennale

Turku,
Finland

New Performance Turku Biennale presents works from altogether 20 international artists and artist groups. In addition the biennale program consists of discussions, performance lectures and parties. The performances take place in various venues around the city of Turku: in theaters, museums, galleries, shops, streets, parks and community spaces.

New Performance Turku Biennale is a continuation for the New Performance Turku Festival, which was an international festival for performance and Live Art, organised annually from 2012 to 2021 in Turku, Finland. Currently the New Performance Turku Biennale is working with a 10-year plan (years 2022-2032), producing and presenting works of performance art with political and societal orientation. The aim of the biennale is to take part and open new insights in the discussions around global ecological crisis and other political and social interconnectedness. Performance art is a tool to think and discuss about issues that are yet not articulated, to be part of the wider paradigm shift which is seeking ways to be expressed. The program of the biennale deals with things and phenomena that are maybe too complex and troubled and provoke our thinking. The biennale can present even quite challenging works of performance art, but the festival itself should create a safe and approachable context for the audience. The New Performance Turku Festival has managed that well and performance art is a phenomena in Turku, reaching out both to performance art enthusiasts and to wider audience as well as different minorities.
